BBC NEWS | Business | Illegal downloaders 'face UK ban'

Ah! The issues of law, privacy and piracy on the high seas of the cyber pond.

So, let me see if I have this right.

It is ok to use the internet to copy the works of a student as a basis determining the legality of a war, (September Dossier / Iraq Dossier) but it is not ok to download the latest copy of "Instantly Forgettable" by the Over-hyped.

Have I understood this correctly?

I don't know how I would feel if someone stole my stuff but..... file sharing is becoming so normal that there has to be a way to handle it and maybe the shift should be away from stopping it and working out how it can be regulated and carry on in a functional way.

Perhaps if it worked abit like shareware. If you register your file sharing software and paid an annual fee which gave a kind of licence to share and copy, a percentage of that fee could be returned to those artists whose works you share.
If you copy on to say a cd for those who might not have access to the internet, you could charge for the media and perhaps to cover your costs, then send a percentage back to the artist. There would be those who would cheat the system but then that is human nature I am afraid. Maybe some sort of inducements, say access to other works or promotional stuff, concert tickets, t-shirts, that sort of stuff, to encourage ppl to be honest rather than trying to sue a ten year old for downloading some rubbish track which they will get bored of and delete.
Just a thought.
