Tony Blair attacks Iraq Inquiry as part of Britain's 'obsession with conspiracy theories'

Tony Blair yesterday launched an extraordinary attack on the Iraq inquiry - as the chairman warned that he and others could be recalled over 'gaps' in their evidence. In an outspoken interview in the U.S., the former prime minister dismissed the inquiry as part of a ' continual desire to sort of uncover some great conspiracy'.

Speaking on Fox News he said critics of the war were obsessed with conspiracy theories, and refused to accept that his motives were 'genuine'.

Half-Man, Half-Biscuit are one of the funniest bands I have heard, they always raise a smile and gets my toes tapping.

Here are the two tracks I was enjoying when I came across this article.

Chilcot - A very British Inquiry

I spent yesterday watching Tony Blair being savaged by a flock of dead sheep whilst following the comments on Twitter's #IraqInquiry.
Hardly any of the commentators were impressed by either Tony or the panel.

Depressed, well let me tell you what my day was like yesterday

Well, I haven't been blogging with the frequency that I once did, been feeling a little under-the-weather, bit depressed I guess.
I have been following the Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq war, which is enough to make one depressed in itself, and kinda cross referencing with Craig Murry to gauge reaction and comment with a once FCO Ambassador and his astute group of followers of his website.
Craig also suffers from depression, not surprising really, considering what this government did to him.

But, the reason for this post is not to draw attention to my own, or indeed Craig's current mental state but to the notion that depression is, in someways related to how much control we have over events as demonstrated in this comment on Craig's site.

Depressed, well let me tell you what my day was like yesterday.
We were travelling through a small village about 60km north of Kalemie, we were waved down by a group of people very excited and anxious, we stopped. To cut a long story short, there was a 4 year old kid, very sick with malaria in the village, so we were asked to take a look and see what we could do. We tried for an hour to get an IV line in, but the kid was too far gone. I watched him die, nothing we could do. Local hospital was 7 hour drive away over terrible roads, and even if we could have got him there, they probably would not have the drugs to treat him.
Then it get's interesting. We had originally gone up there to destroy 7 land mines next to a small village called Nyunzu. Half way through the clearance proceedure, one of my guys realised 3 of the mines were booby trapped. I pulled my guys out and did the job myself. 2 hours pouring sweat under a tropical sun not knowing if next minuite would be the last...eventually I got the fuses out and we blew them with det cord and explosives. I spent most of that night throwing up. Morale of the story Craig, don't get depressed just because some prick lies through his back teeth to save his arse, there are bigger problems out there Bro. Miss ya...

Reading that has not only inspired me to write this blog post, but to try and get some perspective on my own lack of control.

MP's bury torture evidence

The government was accused last night of hiding behind claims of a threat to national security to suppress evidence of torture by the CIA on a prisoner still held in Guantánamo Bay.

An unprecedented high court ruling yesterday blamed the US, with British connivance, for keeping the "powerful evidence" secret, sparking criticism from lawyers, campaigners and MPs, who claimed the government had capitulated to American bullying.

Two senior judges said they were powerless to reveal the information about the torture of Binyam Mohamed, an Ethiopian-born British resident, because David Miliband, the foreign secretary, had warned the court the US was threatening to stop sharing intelligence about terrorism with the UK.

In a scathing judgment, Lord Justice Thomas and Mr Justice Lloyd Jones said the evidence, and what MI5 knew about it, must remain secret because according to Miliband, the American threats meant "the public of the United Kingdom would be put at risk".

The judges made clear they were unhappy with their decision, but said they had no alternative as a result of Miliband's claim. Their ruling revealed that Miliband stuck to his position about the threat to the UK even after Barack Obama signed orders two weeks ago banning torture and announcing the closure of the Guantánamo Bay prison camp.

Last night Miliband seemingly backtracked on his office's submission, saying there had been no threat by the US to break off intelligence co-operation. "It's American information and it is for the Americans to decide whether to publish their information," Miliband told Channel 4 television.

David Miliband statement on US 'torture pressure'

David Miliband has told MPs that releasing classified US information could do "real and significant damage" to British national security.

Publishing details of the treatment of Binyam Mohamed against US wishes could hurt trust key to intelligence sharing.

The Lib Dems said documents proved the US had threatened the UK over the issue, a claim that Mr Miliband denies.

A US government letter to the Foreign Office warned of "lasting damage" to intelligence sharing if this happened.

'Real threat'

Mr Miliband has said the US did not threaten to "break off" security cooperation if its secret papers had been made public, a claim made by two High Court judges in a ruling on Wednesday.

But Channel 4 News reported that the US State Department wrote to the Foreign Office last August saying the publication of classified documents relating to the case was "likely to result in serious damage to US national security".

Disclosure of the information could also "harm existing intelligence information-sharing arrangements" between the two nations, the letter added.

So our special relationship with the US reminds me of those relationships enjoyed by the victims of sex offenders, based on threats disguised as promises. Well, "the public of the United Kingdom would be put at risk", certainly sounds like a threat to me.

On another note, it seems the new tenant of the Oval Office has finally decided whilst adding arthropods to the collection, to keep the old poodle.
